From the New York Times: “A total of 55 plants have closed or have announced plans to shut down, according to a count by the Sierra Club. That will leave 395 coal-burning plants in the United States, compared with 522 in 2010, according to the Sierra Club.”
…”Nationwide, coal production dropped this year by an estimated 7 percent even as exports grew to Asia and Europe, according to the Energy Department.”
Now that’s cookin’ with gas… Let’s hope it spreads quickly throughout the world. China has more restrictive mileage standards for its cars than the U.S. Maybe they’ll do the same with coal.

That makes 4 since the ‘Fukushima Pause’ ended in October.
I had been thinking they would have between 6 and 8 starts a year for the first year after the pause. I may have to readjust…it looks more one per month.
In 2008, 10 reactor builds were started
In 2009, 12 reactor builds were started
In 2010, 16 reactor builds were started.
Of course, reactors are being shut down but that’s mainly in Europe, Japan and the US. I would not be surprised if by 2020 30-40 reactor builds annually were started.

In 2011 & 2012, 7 constructions were started. However, the data did not show any Chinese ones (if there are 4 Chinese starts in 2012, that’ll be 11 total. Since the start of 2008, 50 reactors under construction.
We’ll see how the pace picks up.

There were zero starts in China for 2012 prior to November 1st.
The official line when they announced lifting of the moratorium was that they would restart at a slow methodical pace.
Looks more like the horses were lined up at the starting gate chomping at the bit to me 😉
